Conquering the Google Search Console

or.. how I beat having to pay to register a CNAME DNS entry

So today I decided I would make an attempt to improve the Blog's SEO (Search Engine Optimization for those that are new here). I dutifully cranked up the good ol' Chrome and got onto the Google Search Console page. It all seemed so easy. Either add a CName entry to the DNS via my Domain Name provider (unfortunately mine is free, yes I’m a poor student, so such features are not available) or add a specially crafted web page to the root of my site.

I can do that, I said. I have a Templates folder where my index.html page lives. Just chuck it in there and she'll be right. But no! This is Flask. A quick check on the Great and Mighty Stack Overflow (All Hail!) reminded me that you need to create a special route for anything to exist on the site. Just like this...

@app.route("/google37d26c312bdd0153.html")
def google_site_verf():
    return render_template("google37d26c312bdd0153.html")

Having done this I crossed my fingers and hit Enter. Bingo, your page has been accepted. But no, no immediate gratification for poor Dave. The wheels of the great Web Crawler turn slowly! So one day soon, you may yet see me on the great behemoth! Here’s hoping 😊
