Backups for Backup Sake

or.. how I beat the CRON monster

Posted by Dave on June 01, 2024

So.. today I finally got around to implementing a CRON driven online backup solution for my various Raspberry Pi servers. For those that are interested, this is the solution I used,

https://nerd-tech.net/2022/09/08/how-to-make-a-live-backup-of-your-raspberry-pi-ubuntu-raspberry-pi-os-server-to-create-live-bootable-iso-images-on-an-external-drive/

This was not as difficult as I had always believed it to be. An excellent piece of code by RonR is at the heart of the solution, along with some simple steps to demystify and beat the CRON monster. I was even able to cobble together some additional commands to send the output to the SysLog so I can check they are completing correctly. As a test, I uploaded the first backup.img file created to a spare micro-SD card and booted one of the Pi’s with it. Success!

So now I’m prepared for hardware failure an SD card corruption. Worth it.
